If figures are enough to prove the real state of a technology, then VoIP is undeniably rocking and rolling. More than one thousand billion of VoIP minutes was recorded around the world last year.

In its eight annual VoIP industry report, the market research firm, iLocus asserts that, 1,079 billion minutes of VoIP traffic was carried by different service providers worldwide during 2006.

Out of 1,079 billion minutes, local calls accounts 382.3 billion, long distance call volume 614.4 billion and international long distance call 82.6 billion. It shows VoIP is in full swing in the telephony market when it comes to long distance calling.

The report further states that, there were nearly 37.5 million VoBB (Voice over Broadband) customers worldwide by the end of 2006, an increase of 16.5 million customers over the year.

VoIP found its strong growth in US, France and Germany. The US added 3 million new subscribers, while France 2.15 million and Germany 1.16 million new subscribers.
