The government of Bangladesh has seized the VoIP equipment of Aktel, a division Telekom Malaysia Berhad, terming the company operates their illegal VoIP business in the country.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has also registered a case against the company.

The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) seized VoIP equipment from Aktel’s head office in Bangladesh. The equipments are STMs, softswitches and IP gateways. However, Rab has not held any of the company officials, media report confirm.

RAB, an anti-crime elite force in Bangladesh explains the government losses nearly Tk 180 crore annually on account of illegal VoIP services. A case was filed against Aktel under the Bangladesh Telecommunication Control Act.

According to media reports, Aktel managed to run its illegal VoIP business by providing equipment to the five companies such as Orbitar Technologies, Future Data Network, Brothers International, Sun Trading, and Islam and Brothers.
