A study carried out by Brix Networks exposes that the net phone services rarely provide same call quality as traditional phones. The report says that VoIP call quality has declined by five per cent in the past 18 months.
Brix Networks launched a free website TestYour VoIP.com two years ago. It’s a free website, which lets the costumers to test the quality of their VoIP service.
The company tested about one million VoIP connections in the site and observed about 20 percent of all calls had unacceptable quality. This is up from about 15 per cent of calls made about a year ago.
The reason for the deteriorating VoIP calls is the growing competition for resources on the same IP network as other services such as video, music downloads and interactive gaming.
Kaynam Hedayat, CTO at Brix explains that VoIP calls ride over the same network that is also delivering internet access and in some cases IP-based video. While the speed of broadband networks has been increased, consumers are doing more on the net, which affects quality.
