The 100 per cent Fusion Telecommunications-owned Dubai-based firm Efonica, is warming itself to become the global leader VoIP services beating Skype that has over 100 million subscribers. But how? Well, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of United Arab Emirates ruling VoIP legal is imminent. The ruling is expected to come within Q1 of 2007. As the soundbytes emerging now, the suggestion is that Efonica will be fully prepared by then.
Upbeat with the prospect, Ibrahim Choueiry, Regional Director Asia and Africa, Efonica says;
We aim to be ready as soon as the TRA makes an announcement.
There may be a probable glitch though in Efonica’s ambitions. It is that the key to be a world leader is to provide not only quality service, but also it should be free. Also, one more thing that might bother subscribers is that how many service providers would be into play though which the Efonica service would be provided.
So whether the service would be free or the service would be provided through other players that the only two current service providers Etisalat and Du is crucial to Efonica’s grand plans.
An optimistic Choueiry believes that TRA ruling will ‘probably let IP to IP calls be a free service in much the same way as communicating via MSN Messenger is free’. However, if the service is provided through a third party, then obviously there would be some kind of a charge to the customer.
Anyway, only time will tell how this thing shapes up for Efonica. For that, one will have to wait till the first quarter of 2007. In any case, with a large migrant population in the UAE especially from South Asia, if this clicks, Skype might well have a competitor in its hands. Efonica can well spread like a viral not only in the Gulf, but to South Asia as well, and that’s where the numbers are.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Hi all,
After travelling in Dubai (UAE) and in China, I found a software that unblock Skype and censored contents in some countries.
I know Skype is blocked or there is censor in the following countries : Belize, China, Columbia, Cuba, Jordan, UAE ...
After searching internet, I found a way to make calls and to access censored content in those countries using a VPN (Virtual Private Network).
How does it works ?
A VPN encrypte the data you send on internet to a US IP adress (tunnel). This way your Internet Services Provider can’t detect you are using Skype or another VoIP software ! It allow you access to censored content and geographical locked contents (i.e: listening radio on pandora.com , watching TV streams for US residents, ...).
There is a lot of VPN softwares, the first I tried was VPNaccounts. I didn’t like it because it took a lot of time for activation, it was expensive and helpdesk support was very slow.
A friend of mine who lives in Belize told me about another VPN software called Witopia personnalVPN.
Now I am using Witopia personnalVPN. It is easier to use (you just have to launch the software before launching Skype), faster and cheaper than all other VPN softwares I tried.
It costs 39.99$ and works perfectly.
You can download it from the editor’s website : Witopia personalVPN
Works on Windows and Mac.
I hope this post will help people who are in those countries and reducing censorship !

Also you can unblock VoIP and unblock Skype using something vpn service. VPN tunnel prevent traffic monitoring and allow you bypass local network restrictions.
Skype is the big leader in the U.S. still though. Its for casual conversation and in dubai Voip is mainly used for Business Phones. Regardless the voip market is booming.
