A Miami man was charged for stealing more than 10 minutes of VoIP telephone service and selling them for $0.004 per minute to customers.
According to US Attorney’s Office, Edwin Pena told a name of computer hacker Robert Moore to Washington State. He told that he was helping him in making illegally route of Internet telephone calls through the network of 15 unnamed VoIP companies. Pena represented himself as a legitimate telecommunications wholesaler, while the value of hacking techniques of networks is US$300,000 from each of the carriers.
Leslie Wiser Jr., Newark FBI Special Agent Charge said,
They had hoped they had engineered a brilliant toll-free calling network for themselves. The 23-year old boy sold Internet telecom services in low price to two companies in starting of year 2004:
1. Fortes Telecom
2. Miami Tech & Consulting
According to U.S. Attorney, the service is free for Pena because he hacked lines with lawful VoIP providers and routing the calls without detected. Pena and Moore supposedly set up a web of servers to hide their tracks and try to crack the code of VoIP calls on the network. Once the code is cracked, they would be able make calls through lawful VoIP network.
In this scheme, they have a profit of more than US$1 million. Pena was able to buy real estate and BMW M3 sports car.
