VoIPcentral has carried out a story on the Sweden-based VoIP service provider Rebtel and its various offers. The site has just indicated that Rebtel’s offerings are quite similar to that of Skype. Today, I have come across Jon Arnold’s Blog where the writer has provided an analytical view on Rebtel and Skype. Going by the story Rebtel-the Next Skype, I feel it necessary to ask the question, Is Rebtel another Skype?

Let us compare the nature of services both these VoIP players extend in the market.

Rebtel: First, go to the company’s website rebtel.com/getstarted. Then submit your phone number, name and the place. You should also type the same information of the person to whom you want to talk. Rebtel then generates local phone numbers for the caller and recipient.

The price, the company charges is very negligible. It just costs $1 a week to have free mobile-to-mobile calling .The Company’s REBin service operates in the 35 countries of the world, however the customers can make call to any country by using REBout which let you to use your mobile phone to call any phone in the world.

Skype
is a Peer-to-Peer Network, which requires a PC, Broadband over WiFi or Ethernet, and an Operating System that allows you to run third party software. It makes all calls free for its users. (see how it works). It produced good results on PCs. It would go mobile in the coming days. However, the technocrats consider it a wrong business model.

Jeff Pulver says that Rebtel is developing a new system that would bring radical change in the VoIP world. Just like their wireline cousins, mobile operators are best positioned to be wireless access providers. Wireless operators should not be able to claim ownership of someone or their devices. They should be happy just being access providers.
