Microsoft, Softbank BB and Softbank BB’s Telecom subsidiary Japan Telecom have announced a partnership to develop communication services that combine VoIP, mailing, Internet access and IM along with other services.

The trials of the integrated services are planned by spring next year.

Some of these services are:

1. Microsoft’s Solution for Enhanced VoIP Services

2. Softbank BB’s broadband VoIP services

3. Japan Telecom’s network infrastructure and management offerings

This is MS’ latest attempt in trying to tap the exploding VoIP bazaar. Before this, in September this year MS announced joint VoIP projects with Qwest and again this month MS announced that its forthcoming IM - Messenger Live will also be a VoIP software in conjunction with a nonexclusive deal with MCI.

MS’ Solution for Enhanced VoIP Services includes hosted versions of several MS’ communication software packages like:

1. Exchange Server 2003

2. Office Live Communications Server 2005

3. Windows SharePoint Services

With MS now turning its focus seriously on VoIP, there is no doubt that there would be some very hot news awaiting us in the coming year. I have no doubts in my mind that the battle maneuvers that companies would employ are going to be real treats for VoIP watchers like me. Whatever MS does tend to get very, very interesting indeed.

I am waiting with baited breath really.
