Wi-Fi phones that are actaully VoIP technology have started to grab attention in the market at last rising out of relative obscurity. NetCodec’s uVP-2100 is one such phone that I am sure will grab all attentions soon when it comes to VoIP handsets.
The handset’s hardware is actually as good as an advanced PC that we used in the late 90s (if not better).
Why? Just see below:
CPU : 32 bits 400 MHz
RAM : 64 MB SDRAM
ROM : 16 MB Flash Memory
One of the best things about the latest handset is its large 240 x 320 pixel display with 262K RGB. This can be enjoyed to the hilt by using compatible H263/MPEG4 technologies.
The video phone operates on 7.5 frames per second @ CIF (352 x 588) max. The UVP-2100 also has an inbuilt MIDI and Mp3 player that can be used for ring tone settings.
The OS is Linux.
However, there are some features that we expect in it are absent like SMS. It will be possible though if there is a server that supports this service that will depend on the hotspot you are connected to.
It promises to be a cool phone given the features. With F1000 launched recently, are we going to see the Wi-Fi phone bazaar heating up as the cellular bazaar did? I would say yes, the day is not far away. In fact it is just round the corner.
