Luca has created a fresh debate in the blogsphere with his latest post ‘10 reasons why VoIP has succeeded‘. Being a keen observer of latest happenings around the VoIP world, I want to share my personal views on Luca’s post.
No doubt, the ten factors (Broadband, Skype, Jeff Pulver and VON, Asterisk, Dream of calling for FREE, Vocaltec, Competition, G723, G729, SIP and Internet) have played a key role in the evolution of VoIP. However, it would be too early to say that VoIP is a successful technology.
I personally feel that VoIP is a budding technology as of now. It has to go a long way. By large, corporate world is still ignorant of VoIP. They have very limited knowledge on the technical aspects of this voice technology. Most of the developing countries are vehemently opposing VoIP due to security concerns.
VoIP is to be called successful only when it ensures us effective, secure and reliable communication service.

Security is a concern of not only the devloping nations but of developed nations too. I’ve been using Skype frequently now. Security has been my concern too. But I know that Skype uses 256b encryption. And it uses only standard cryptographic methods to protect the content transmitted over the P2P network. So Skype is working its way, and for me its good.
To say that VOIP it still not succesfull is the same as tos say that Skype,Vonage, and others failed. I dont think so.
