It seems that eBay’s investment on Skype proved to be a costly deal. Despite the fact that Skype grows steadily in the VoIP market, eBay fails to make profit out of it.
As per the available data, Skype got another 19 million registered users last quarter, making it 113 million users worldwide. The Skypers spent 7.1 billion minutes talking with each other over the internet. However, the big question which eBay likes to ask: where is the profit?
As we know, eBay has purchased the VoIP Company Skype for $2.6 billion with expectation that it would make huge profit by extending its services to the large number of subscribers of Skype. So far, it has earned only $44 million in revenues, up 26 percent from last quarter. Suppose, Skype achieves its estimated revenue of $200 million for the full year, then also eBay would not make profit out of it.
As of now, Skype is facing tough challenge in the VoIP market after Gizmo Project geared up to provide free VoIP calls in 60 countries.
