There are reports that quite a few companies in Taiwan have delayed their development of related Skype-enabled hardware peripherals. According to sources at Taiwan makers, this has been attributed to the inability to procure the needed license agreement in time from Skype Technologies after it was acquired by eBay.
It cited that though Skype is willing to license its technology to the local makers, the processes have been delayed due to a shortage of manpower at Skype.
Andy Abramson in his blog came up with some kind of a conspiracy theory stating that it can be a sales strategy by Skype to create an illusion of very high demand and interest so that it can extract the price that it wishes.
Quite impressive Andy; in fact you might have hit the nail right on the head. However, on second thoughts, do you think Skype will resort to such antics when companies like Google, Yahoo! etc are coming up with similar VoIP services? Your report source clearly cites a source saying that Skype’s market position and sales may be affected as these companies launch their services. Why would Skype make it miserable for Taiwan makers to acquire the needed licenses? Hmm, I am not very sure, but then Skype may indeed be facing manpower shortages.
