No sooner, Vonage announced the development of two of the three patents owned by Verizon, Sprint Nextel reopened the two-year old legal battle to haunt the VoIP pioneer.

Sprint Nextel claimed that Vonage has illegally infringed its inventions to develop VoIP service. Without Sprint’s inventions, Vonage would have ceased to exist, informs company’s counsel B. Trent to the juries.

Sprint Nextel, which is considered as the third largest phone company in USA has sought $103 million damage for the illegal use of its six inventions by Vonage.

However, Vonage strongly denied the allegation saying that it is challenging the validity of the inventions.

Vonage had earlier lost the patent infringement case filed by Verizon and was ordered to pay $58m in damages, pay a 5.5 per cent royalty to Verizon, and injected not to register any new customers. Vonage had challenged the ruling in the higher court. The case is pending.
