Symantec Corp. has announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire the enterprise software provider for instant messaging IMlogic.
IMlogic has IM Manager and Real Time Threat Protection System (RTTPS). What makes IM Manager stand out is that it provides
a) Guaranteed IM policy enforcement for regulatory compliance,
b) Centralized security controls, and
c) Enhanced real-time communications for extending IM across the enterprise.
Apart from text messaging and file sharing, IM networks also offer VoIP services for free calling between clients.
Enrique Salem, senior VP, security products & solutions, Symantec, said,
With the best-of-breed instant messaging management and compliance software from IMlogic, Symantec will be the first and only vendor to offer a complete security and archiving solution to help customers manage all their messaging requirements. This is not the first time that these two companies have partnered on ventures. Before this they partnered in
a) Delivering solutions for protecting IM from various internet threats and from IM spamming
b) Research analysts from both the companies had collaborated jointly to address the exponential growth of IM and P2P threats on the World Wide Web
c) The email and content archiving offering from Symantec, Enterprise Vault, has been integrated with IMlogic’s IM Manager since 2002.
With so much being discussed on the possible threats VoIP faces, strategic tie-ups like this from an internet security company like Symantec and VoIP software developers and operators will go a long way in chalking out how fast VoIP is accepted as a full-fledged telephony option. It would be a big tragedy should VoIP face the similar threats that Internet faced as it was booming that ravaged many businesses from the mid 90s through the first few years of this decade.
