T-Mobile has joined hands with Linksys to develop a new router ‘WRTU54G‘ to empower its Hotspot@Home service for residential VoIP.
The router has been forwarded to Federal Communication Commission (FCC) for testing.
The mobile operator has launched its Hotspot@Home service in June this year. The Hotspot@Home enables T-Mobile mobile customers to transfer their calls between the T-Mobile cellular network and a WiFi hot spot in home. As of now, the service supports two handsets, Samsung t409 and the Nokia 6086.
With WRTU54G router, the Hotspot@Home will become a highly versatile VoIP device. The new router has two GSM SIM card ports, most probably for a landline handset. Other important features of the router are RJ45 Router Ports, WAN Port and Wireless-G connectivity.
It is now more or less apparent that T-Mobile is entering VoIP bandwagon to compete with bigwigs in the market.

I just received this router via UPS yesterday and got it setup this morning... I was hoping that I’d be able to clone my business cell phone’s sim card and place it in the ”line2” sim card slot so that when I’m at home (very rural area with poor coverage) I’d be able to make/receive calls via VoIP... but alas there is something missing on your normal sim card that allows it to register with the VoIP server or something. But if you want to take your ”home” phone sim card and place it into your cell phone, I tested that and it DOES work... so maybe we can figure out how to make our cell phone sims to work with VoIP via some kind of hack... that would be AWESOME, and I think would bring a LOT of new customers to T-Mobile if it became a possibility!!!
