The recently passed USA ,the Patriot law seeks to enhance the monitoring framework. For the achievement of the given goals, all technologies must comply with legal statutes.
As per the provisions of Patriot Act the FBI can access the private phone, internet, e-mail and financial records of ordinary people.
In a sense it will give draconian powers to FBI to keep a monitor on anybody in the US.
Under the given provisions electronic records can be sourced from “electronic communications service providers.” The providers include not only ISP companies but also universities, public interest organizations and because all of them provide Internet access facilities.
Since VoIP also happens to be an area of communication therefore the service provider like Skype etc will also be bound to open their networks for surveillance. This seriously infringes the ‘right to privacy’ of the individual.
It remains to be seen how the things shape up in the coming days.
