The US Administration’s fetish with security has just grown kinkier it seems with former Department of Homeland Security boss Tom Ridge expressing his desire to body search the latest hot bird - VoIP in the name of security.

VoIP 2.0 IP Telephony show in Fort Lauderdale Ridge praised VoIP and cited its usefulness during times of calamities as happened during Hurricane Katrina during which, when all cell towers toppled and landlines went out, VoIP came to the rescue in communications.

Ridge however was very clear in his thoughts about the National Security Agency to intercept phone calls of suspected terrorists and said it should also include interception of VoIP calls.

He said;

We cannot afford to operate as if events like September 11 or (Katrina) won’t happen again. We don’t live in fear, we live in freedom - and that’s the way it will continue to be. VoIP is just one technology that will help us live freely and be good citizens at the same time.

However, Americans shouldn’t mind this anyway. After all, for them, tolerating zero-privacy is a way of life. It has been so for a long, long time now. This post by Om Malik may give you an insight on this.
