VoIP penetration is high in US with more than 100,000 people opt for the service each month. However, the VoIP call quality continues to disturb them since long. For such customers, Keynote Systems brings some assurances.
In its latest study, Keynote Systems, a well known Internet and Communication testing company concluded that VoIP audio quality is improving. It is now better than the traditional phone networks within the USA.
To test the VoIP audio quality, the testing company had rented a number of apartments in San Francisco and New York City and equipped them with testing machines.
The distance between the two call centers was nearly 3,000 miles. They made around 125,000 calls throughout the month of August using VoIP hard phones, VoIP soft phones, digital cable VoIP phones and traditional phones.
The Keynote group has found out that VoIP phones that used PacketCable (an IP multimedia transmission system optimized for coax) recorded 4.24 MOS. The MOS is 4.0 for the traditional phone networks.

It would seem that voice quality is not the issue that is winning customers to VoIP systems. Voice-quality is a minimal requirement to get in the door, but it won’t make a sale.
Consumers appear to be ready to accept lower quality in exchange for new capabilities, as is the case for traditional cellular and BlackBerry phones.
The key issue for telcos and would-be disruptors of telecom (including VoIP suppliers) is to consider these two questions:
