VoIP is getting momentum in Romania. The VoIP services have witnessed rapid growth in these days in that country. Although the landline telephony service still dominates 90 percent of the market, the internet based phone services will move forward in near future, says James Hubley, the Romtelecom director.



Romania posts 96 percent growth in the broadband internet services in the year 2005. The data presented by the National Communications Regulatory Authority shows that the penetration is standing at around 3.46 percent. There were some 750,000 broadband internet connections by the end of 2005, of which 380,000 dedicated access connections and 84 percent of these for individuals. Zsolt Nagy, minister of telecommunications & IT predicted that Romania would have in 2009 some four million broadband connections.



The VoIP operators gained ten percent of Romtelecom’s market share. Romania has some 462,000 VoIP service users. The number excludes the users who access free VoIP services of Skype or Yahoo! Messenger.
