Pushed to the edge, Vonage today announced that almost all of its customers have basic 911 service and a majority of them have Enhanced 911. (For the common man E911 is a feature that automatically associates a physical address with the calling party’s telephone number)
Anyway, it a laudable feat Vonage has equipped an additional 1,061 locally run calling centers, in over 360 new counties, with E911 capabilities bringing the total number of calling centers within the 911 service area to over 3180 now and that too within just 90 days!
Last June, the FCC gave all VoIP service providers 120 days to create an E911 system from scratch, and provide all of its customers, wherever they are in the US, with E911 service.
As it looks now, Vonage will be able to provide 100% E911 within the next few weeks. However, I won’t be too surprised if it missed the deadline by a whisker because only 30 days are left. Let’s see what happens, though my bet would like with Vonage, What do you say?
