A few days back we carried a news item about Intel and Skype’s plan to provide users 10-way conference calls. It has made many analysts skeptical about Intel’s VoIP plans now that it has allied with Skype. Some said that it was like coercing people to use only one particular chipset.
What I think about it:
a) Intel’s’ plans for limiting Skype’s conferencing code to Intel only will backfire as the company is involved in a bitter antitrust dispute with its main rival, AMD.
b) Such ‘exlusive’ sounding marketing plans are out of fashion. The customers are smarter now. They don’t like to be coerced to a particular platform. I guess there would be boycott of Skype.
c) It is hard to believe that you can indeed limit Skype’s advanced software to Intel’s processors only. Actually, it sounds really stupid.
