A Voipplanet story based on Infonetics Research report says that VOIP market is on the upswing. The report predicts Voice and intelligent IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) equipment would be double in 2009 touching $5.8 billion from 2.5 billion last year.
Before going to comment on the above question, let me summarize the report.
1.Six percent growth in second quarter of 2006
2.17 percent rise in shipments of VoIP phones or 2.1 million shipments
3.Residential and SOHO VoIP subscribers’ base to touch 47 million worldwide
4.Nearly $120billion to be spent on VoIP services in North America, Europe and Asia
The recent development shows that VoIP market is somehow behaving like the Wi-Fi market some years ago. A few years ago, the Wi-Fi product manufactures made huge profits but service providers found their pockets empty.
Now the VoIP market is going through a similar phase. Vonage, Verizon, Skype and SunRocket, all the big brands experienced heavy losses in the Q2. Even, there is no sign of recovery in the third quarter. On the other side, Netgear, Logitech and Linksys recorded windfall profits in the same quarter.
As the market will grow on, the service providers will be forced to bring down their prices to lure customers towards their offerings.
